The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William T. Gordon (ASN: 0-382484), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action near Murdjadjo, Algeria, 8, 9, & 10 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Lieutenant Gordon performed the many dangerous tasks assigned him over sparsely covered, rugged terrain occupied throughout by the enemy, and continually met by automatic weapons fire. He led a counterattack that stopped an enemy cavalry charge which threatened the right flank of the 26th Infantry Regiment, His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
