The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas J. Fosegan (ASN: 12004654), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily on 5 August 1943. When the advance of his company was retarded by intense enemy machine gun and rifle fire, Private Fosegan volunteered to act as scout and draw fire, in an effort to locate enemy guns. While performing his unselfish mission, he was mortally wounded. Private Fosegan’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty inspired his comrades and materially assisted his company in attaining its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
