The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Robert G. Maxon, United States Navy, for extraordinary performance and distinguished service in the line of duty on board a destroyer during the operations off Formosa on 14 October 1944. On that date, when the ship to which he was attached was ordered to stand by a torpedoed United States warship and while in charge of a party to bring aboard survivors from that ship, he, by the demonstration of excellent leadership, carried out his duty in an exceptional and highly efficient manner. On several occasions he went into the water himself to assist men who were too exhausted to help themselves. His performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
