The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Michael Fischetti, Jr. (ASN: 33137258), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Colleville-Sur-Mer, Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Voluntarily leaving the shelter of a sea wall and advancing several hundred yards under constant bombardment to an exposed vantage point, Private Fischetti opened fire with his rocket launcher on strongly fortified enemy emplacements. Ignoring personal safety, he persisted in his effort until resistance was overcome and his company was able to seize an important objective. Private Fischetti’s courage and initiative contributed materially to the success of the invasion. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
