Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 43 (September 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas F. Flanagan (ASN: 31087822), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily during the period from March through August 1943. Private Flanagan voluntarily accompanied litter bearers to a battlefield constantly swept with artillery, mortar, machine-gun, and small-arms fire to evacuate wounded soldiers. During a particularly heavy attack, Private Flanagan remained on the field directing litter bearers and rendering first aid to severely wounded soldiers. His courage and care of the wounded saved the lives of several men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
