The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Harold Halsey Dunwoody, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving while serving as Executive Officer of the 3d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Yangon-ni, Korea, on 22 January 1951. Major Dunwoody was in charge of a rear installation at Yangon-ni when it was attacked. He saw in the attack the danger of the loss of vehicles and equipment. Under intense machine gun fire, he moved from vehicle to vehicle to organize the drivers to a point of cover, and then ordered his troops into a close-in perimeter. With complete disregard for his own safety, Major Dunwoody moved to enemy fire to organize the headquarters personnel and other men into the counterattacking party which successfully repulsed the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Dunwoody, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
