Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 51 (September 25, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert Fortgang (ASN: 7071146), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. During a determined enemy counterattack, the ammunition supply of Private Fortgang’s battalion became seriously depleted. Although the only road to an ammunition dump was under heavy enemy fire, Private Fortgang voluntarily proceeded over this road and returned with much needed ammunition. His action contributed materially to the decisive defeat suffered by the enemy. Private First Class Fortgang’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
