The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Billie Junior Emert (ASN: 35094278), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Private Emert repeatedly exposed himself to intense fire and carried a cumbersome load of ammunition across a densely mined beach. From a precarious position on the flank he delivered effective and sustained automatic fire against the enemy emplacements. His gallant act enabled his company to advance and seize several important objectives. Private Emert’s actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
