The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Samuel J. Elliott (ASN: 35172308), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Mateur, Tunisia, on 30 April 1943. During a savage enemy counterattack, Corporal Elliott, although twice wounded, refused evacuation and remained exposed to direct enemy machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire, Corporal Elliott’s action, at the cost of his life, exemplified the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
