The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph M. Courchesne (ASN: 31403312), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity In action against the enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment, 2d Infantry Division, 5th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 December 1944, in Luxembourg. When five casualties were reported lying in an exposed position subjected to further enemy fire, Private Courchesne, a medical transport driver, undertook the hazardous mission of evacuating his wounded comrades from their perilous position. Driving his vehicle to the area of the casualties, Private Courchesne, despite the great danger, led a litter team over the exposed terrain to evacuate the wounded. Oblivious to the enemy fire, Private Courchesne then carried the remaining casualty to the vehicle and evacuated the casualties to the battalion aid station. His heroism and indomitable courage exemplify the highest traditions of the Medical Department and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
