Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 873 (December 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Robert S. Jacob (ASN: RA-12250818), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date Sergeant Jacob was a member of a group returning a prisoner to friendly lines. A hidden enemy machine gun suddenly commenced firing upon them, as the group dispersed they left the wounded radio operator and his radio behind. Sergeant Jacob immediately turned his prisoner over to a companion and began crawling toward the helpless man. Disregarding his own safety, he crawled to the side of his comrade and promptly applied first aid amidst the heavy concentration of enemy fire. After tying the wounded man to his back, Sergeant Jacob crawled to protective cover and leaving his comrade in a position of safety, returned to retrieve the radio which was vitally needed at the company command post. His courageous action was instrumental in saving the life of the wounded man and enabled his unit to continue its communications with friendly elements. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Jacob reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
