Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5 (February 1, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Alex S. Dubow (ASN: 36961980), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Dessau, Germany, on 23 April 1945. When his unit’s position was subjected to an intense artillery, rocket, and machine gun barrage and casualties were sustained, Sergeant Dubow, with utter disregard for personal safety, courageously crossed perilous terrain to the side of wounded comrades. He then skillfully administered first aid and fearlessly evacuated the injured men to a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
