The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Warrant Officer (CW-2) Clemens J. Duprey, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 12 August 1969, while serving as the Commander of a ready reaction force with the 919th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a base camp was suddenly attacked by an estimated two hundred sappers. Reacting instantly, Warrant Officer Duprey directed his reaction force to one heavily assaulted area of the perimeter and placed suppressive fire on the enemy troops who had breached the perimeter wire. Under his leadership, the combat engineer vehicles were able to successfully engage the enemy with machine guns and the main demolition guns. Exposing himself to the intense hostile fire, he directed effective fire against the sapper teams which were, at one time, only thirty meters in front of his position. When the fire subsided at one point, he helped to aid several wounded men and transfer them to an aid station in the rear area. Sporadic small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire continued throughout the entire rescue of the thirteen personnel. Warrant Officer Duprey continued to provide leadership until the determined enemy force was thoroughly defeated, resulting in twenty enemy killed and the recovery of numerous weapons and supplies. Chief Warrant Officer Duprey’s courageous and gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
