The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Chief Warrant Officer (CW-2) Clemens J. Duprey, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 17 July 1969, while serving as the Maintenance Officer with the 919th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Warrant Officer Duprey received word that a supply convoy had been attacked by an North Vietnamese Army force. He quickly directed his force of armored vehicles to the contact area and coordinated the movement of the vehicles to provide the most effective volume of suppressive fire. Seeing that friendly casualties had been sustained, he moved his vehicles into the center of the conflict so that the wounded could be safely evacuated. Ignoring the enemy rocket-propelled grenades that were exploding about his position, Warrant Officer Duprey remained in place until the safe evacuation of the injured had been accomplished. He then reorganized his men and mounted a vicious assault against the enemy positions completely destroying them. Warrant Officer Duprey’s determined leadership resulted in thirteen enemy killed, one prisoner captured and the recovery of large quantities of enemy equipment. Warrant Officer Duprey’s outstanding leadership and disregard for his own safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
