The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class James L. Dunlop, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 29 April 1969, while serving as a gunner with the 929th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while the company was moving through dense jungle with elements of the Regiment’s 1st Squadron, the friendly force encountered a heavily-fortified enemy bunker complex. As they led the armored vehicles through the hostile base camp, the commander and the leader of the lead tank were seriously wounded by enemy fire. Disregarding the hostile fusillade, Specialist Dunlop ran two hundred meters to a safe position. When he was assured that the casualties were receiving proper medical assistance, he raced back to the endangered tank and quickly put it and its main gun back into operation. His heroic actions were instrumental in the eventual defeat of the enemy force. Specialist Fourth Class Dunlop’s outstanding courage, devotion to duty and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
