    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Wladyslaw Dudek (ASN: 6147470), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery B, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action at Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. Sergeant Dudek and another enlisted man were washed overboard from an amphibious vehicle during a landing operation. Sergeant Dudek climbed back aboard the vehicle, removed his pack, and plunged into the choppy water to rescue his drowning companion. Although this attempt was unsuccessful, he courageous act, at the risk of his own life, exemplified quick thinking and courageous leadership. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Staff Sergeant Dudek reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
