Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 56 (October 6, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Lyle H. Denick (ASN: 12022997), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. During an attack on strongly fortified enemy positions, Sergeant Denick rendered first aid treatment to the wounded despite a heavy concentration of small arms fire and artillery shells. When he was painfully wounded in this action, he chose to remain in a forward are until all the wounded had been evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
