The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Francis A. Dufrane (ASN: 11019562), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 1st Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Waimes, Belgium, on 19 December 1944. Courageously exposing himself to an advancing enemy tank, which threatened his unit’s security, Sergeant Dufrane, although painfully wounded, fearlessly directed accurate fire and compelled the hostile vehicle to withdraw. His gallant actions and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
