The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Martin A. Demling (ASN: 6717237), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily during the period from March through August 1943. When the forward fire direction center of his battalion was subjected to intense enemy shell fire, Sergeant Demling remained at his post as Operations Sergeant and continued computing accurate firing data against enemy installations until a direct hit demolished the fire direction center and painfully wounded him. His coolness and utter disregard for] self on this occasion reflect the highest credit on the military service. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
