Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Nicholas DiBenedetto (ASN: 31004017), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. During a strong enemy attack on his company’s position in rugged mountainous terrain, Corporal Di Benedetto fired an automatic rifle from an exposed position to cover the withdrawal of his organization. This effective fire succeeded in removing the enemy’s threat to outflank the company. Corporal DiBenedetto continued firing until he received a direct order to withdraw. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
