    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Leroy Cullom Davis (ASN: 0-17171), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 31 January 1943. Despite a heavy enemy artillery barrage, Colonel Davis courageously proceeded over uncharted enemy mine fields and successfully established a forward observation post. His unselfishness, superior leadership, and outstanding gallantry at the cost of his life merit the highest praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
