Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1554 (June 19, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) David S. Dohm (ASN: W-3158506), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 25 July 1968, while serving as a helicopter pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date he was called upon to extract a reconnaissance team which had become surrounded and pinned down by an enemy force. Upon arriving at the scene of the fierce engagement, he observed that a dense fog was rolling in on the small friendly force and that night was fast approaching. Nevertheless, disregarding the poor visibility and the intense small arms and automatic weapons fire directed at the aircraft, Warrant Officer Dohm guided the helicopter into the extremely small landing zone. While the team member dashed to the aircraft and boarded it, he provided covering fire with his rifle. When the entire team was safely on board, Warrant Officer Dohm, again braving the intense enemy anti-aircraft fire, piloted the helicopter out of the contact area and to the team’s base of operations. Warrant Officer Dohm’s outstanding courage and selfless concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
