Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 65 (November 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant John H. Daioczok (ASN: 12022369), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Sergeant Daioczok coolly and efficiently manned a forward observation post during a determined enemy tank attack. Despite the enemy’s speedy and uninterrupted advance, Sergeant Daioczok remained in an exposed position and continued directing effective fire. It was largely because of his courage and determination that this enemy force was ultimately defeated. Technical Sergeant Daioczok’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
