Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 896 (April 7, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Billy (William) A. Dofflemyer (ASN: RA-15784647), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against a hostile force on 25 February 1969, while serving as a rifleman with the Aero Rifle Platoon, Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, as the platoon moved into a heavily-fortified enemy area, it suddenly came under intense automatic weaponsfire from an entrenched enemy force. Specialist Dofflemyer’s squad was immediately pinned down by several enemy soldiers occupying a bunker to the squad’s front. Realizing the need for immediate action, he left he relative safety of his own position and began crawling toward the fortified enemy position. Halfway to his destination, Specialist Dofflemyer was hit and seriously wounded. Despite his extremely painful wounds, he continued relentlessly toward the bunker and destroyed it with a grenade. Specialist Fourth Class Dofflemyer’s outstanding courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
