The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard H. Crowl (ASN: 6956932), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 25 April 1943. When his company’s ammunition supply became seriously depleted during an attack on enemy positions, Private Crowl, despite heavy enemy artillery fire, drove his vehicle through a mine field in an attempt to obtain the ammunition. Although Private Cowl failed in this attempt and was mortally wounded by an exploding enemy mine, his courageous action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Forces of the United States.
