The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fifth Class Bruce G. Dodge, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Dodge distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 June 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while in Cambodia, his element was suddenly engaged by an enemy force of unknown size. In the initial moments of contact, Specialist Dodge placed a highly effective barrage of machinegun fire upon the enemy positions while the injured men were assisted into his vehicle. Due to his efforts, the wounded personnel were rescued and the insurgents completely routed. Specialist Fifth Class Dodge’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
