Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4520 (June 11, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Gary A. Divincenzo (ASN: W-3155241), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Divincenzo distinguished himself by valorous actions on the evening of 24 January 1968, while serving as the Fire Team Leader of a light fire team with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, on a combat mission to search in the Loc Ninh area of Vietnam for a previously sighted hostile force. A brief reconnaissance of the suspected hostile area resulted in the sighting and destruction of a substantial amount of insurgent equipment. When a group of enemy soldiers was spotted, Warrant Officer Divincenzo expertly maneuvered his aircraft to enable his door gunners to bring devastating fire on the insurgents. Despite the hail of enemy fire being directed at his aircraft, Warrant Officer Divincenzo accurately saturated the area with rocket fire, thereby killing three additional Viet Cong soldiers and wounding numerous others. Throughout Warrant Officer Divincenzo’s courageous actions, ten Viet Cong deaths were confirmed, numerous insurgents were wounded and much enemy equipment was destroyed. Warrant Officer Divincenzo’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
