Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 52 (September 27, 1943)

the President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Harry G. Culler (ASN: 0-379715), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, while temporarily attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during the period from April through July 1943. Captain Culler exposed himself to enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire to man an observation post from which had been discovered by the enemy and was under hostile fire. From this position, Captain Culler directed most effective mortar fire which inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and made possible a successful advance by a battalion of our troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
