Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 36 (August 5, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles H. Clay (ASN: 12081804), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. Although cut off from the remainder of his battalion, Sergeant Clay and a small group of men repeatedly repulsed strong enemy thrusts. When an enemy anti-tank weapon opened fire on our tanks, Sergeant Clay skillfully placed effective mortar fire upon the enemy gun and diverted its fire from the tanks. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
