Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 21, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private James G. Cassel (ASN: 6154323), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Military Police Platoon, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. Displaying outstanding courage and coolness in the face of incessant and enemy dive-bombing and artillery action, Private Cassel continued directing military traffic although painfully wounded. His intrepidity and initiative under withering fire prevented dangerous congestion and facilitated our advance. Private Cassel’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
