The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William J. Casey (ASN: 13053323), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during July and August 1943. During an engagement with the enemy, Private Casey, as scout, fearlessly preceded his platoon in an attack. He advanced toward an enemy machine gun emplacement in an attempt to destroy it and in so doing was mortally wounded. Private Casey’s courageous action, at the cost of his life, contributed materially to his company’s success on this occasion. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
