Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 16 (April 10, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private] John W. Cerrone (ASN: 32194695), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. Corporal Cerrone voluntarily crept forward across terrain under constant enemy fire to repair broken communication lines leading to a forward observation post, and remained at this forward position until his mission had been accomplished. His cool judgment under fire enabled the successful completion of his battery’s operation against the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
