The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Edward J. Callaghan, Jr. (ASN: 32105360), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When his unit encountered a fierce enemy tank and artillery action, and wire lines to a battalion of his regiment were severed, Corporal Callaghan proceeded daringly under heavy enemy shellfire to restore vital communications. While on this dangerous mission he exposed himself to the enemy’s barrage and evacuated a wounded comrade to safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
