The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Armor) Robert W. De Mont, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 15 October 1970, while serving as Operations Officer of the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, two platoons of infantry working with the 3d Squadron came under intensefire from an enemy force of unknown size. Several key personnel were wounded and it became necessary to insert the Troop Commander for leadership purposes. Major De Mont, in a Light Observation Helicopter, accomplished the insertion under very precarious conditions. Minutes later, he returned under heavy fire to re-supply the infantry with smoke grenades, and remained in the area throughout the contact to direct the engagement from the air, controlling artillery, air strikes, and gunships. Major De Mont’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
