The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur E. Chatfield (ASN: 0-375058), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from November 1942 to June 1943. When his company was ordered to withdraw before overwhelming enemy artillery and tank fire, Lieutenant Chatfield skillfully directed small group under his command in drawing enemy fire away from the main body of his company, thereby enabling its orderly withdrawal. While directing the withdrawal of the group, Lieutenant Chatfield was mortally wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
