The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Frank C. Carpino (ASN: 6688791), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. While moving a command post forward, Sergeant Carpino, voluntarily and at great risk to his life, crossed terrain constantly swept by intense enemy fire to organize and lead to safety members of his unit when they had been scattered during an engagement with the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
