Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 31 (July 24, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Alfred J. Burge (ASN: 35011666), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from February through July 1943. When a small group of riflemen had been cut off from their battalion during a savage attack against the enemy, Corporal Burge, despite heavy enemy fire, assisted in relieving the riflemen. His courage and determination throughout this action exemplified the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
