The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Gustaf A. Carlson (ASN: 11009121), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to May 1943. Sergeant Carlson led his wire section across open terrain subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire and directed the repairing and maintenance of communications vital to coordinated artillery support of our infantry elements.
