The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) August Daub, Jr., United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 27 December 1968 while serving as a helicopter pilot with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date mounted elements of Troop B were pursuing five armed enemy soldiers through dense jungle terrain. In an effort to block their escape Lieutenant Daub, although under enemy fire, made several low level passes. During one of the passes the aircraft began receiving accurate automatic weapons fire from a well-concealed enemy bunker. Locating the Viet Cong emplacement, Lieutenant Daub, with complete disregard for his personal safety, began making low level strafing runs over the new enemy position. For 45 minutes he directed deadly fire upon the enemy within the bunker, keeping them pinned down until the friendly forces closed on the position and captured them. First Lieutenant Daub’s unwavering devotion to duty, disregard of personal safety while under hostile fire and professional ability were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
