Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 65 (November 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph A. Buffomante (ASN: 32374660), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When his battalion’s supply of ammunition became seriously depleted during a determined enemy counterattack, Private Buffomante voluntarily proceeded through heavy enemy fire to an ammunition dump and replenished the supply. His gallant action contributed materially to the decisive defeat suffered by the enemy. Private First Class Buffomante’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
