The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery), [then Captain] Ralph E. Boynton (ASN: 0-300716), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in November 1943. When enemy tanks and infantry drove through our defenses, Major Boynton, without consideration for his own personal safety, though exposed to continual small arms, tank, artillery, and automatic weapons fire, drove three thousand yards forward of our positions, where Major Boynton successfully destroyed an abandoned ammunition dump, gasoline dump, and water dump. Major Boynton’s action did deny this valuable material to the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
