The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant Paul Brooks (ASN: 14000805), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. When his 105-mm. howitzer became mired in soft sand during landing operations, Sergeant Brooks, despite enemy bombing and although compelled to work in a heavy and treacherous sea, succeeded in attacking a cable to the howitzer and thus permitted it to be drawn ashore. Sergeant Brooks’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
