Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 46 (September 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl A. Bishop (ASN: 33335474), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, in July 1943. While his company unloaded from its landing craft under heavy machine gun and artillery fire from strongly fortified beach defenses, six 4.2 -inch mortars were lost in deep water. Private Bishop, after swimming ashore, learned of this fact. Despite the unusually rough surf and the heavy gun fire to which he was subjected, Private Bishop voluntarily returned at least four times to the point where the mortars had sunk and exerted every effort to retrieve them. His courageous efforts set an inspiring example for his fellow soldiers. Private First Class Bishop’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
