Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 11 (March 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lawrence M. Campbell (ASN: 13014527), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. Private Campbell found it necessary to withdraw his vehicle over a road under constant enemy machine gun and artillery fire. Although his arm was painfully wounded during this withdrawal, he skillfully maneuvered his vehicle over broken terrain to a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
