The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James E. Lowthers, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with I Corps, in action against enemy forces on 1 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. While serving as a litter bearer, Sergeant Lowthers brought Captain Daniel K. Edwards, who had been severely wounded, to the rear under heavy fire from the enemy, during which the upper left side of his helmet was creased by an enemy bullet, from a point about 75 yards from the enemy front lines where enemy snipers in trees had excellent visibility. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
