Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 48 (September 19, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ermil Vaughn Brewer (ASN: 35016697), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily during the period from April through August 1943. Corporal Brewer proceeded across terrain under constant mortar and small arms fire and reconnoitered a favorable position for his machine gun. He personally carried, set up, and operated this weapon and protected his company’s flank until reinforcements could arrive. Although mortally wounded in this action, Corporal Brewer’s gallant action enabled his company to maintain its position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
