Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 46 (September 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John S. Bonarek (ASN: 32233403), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, in July 1943. When the landing craft holding his company grounded in deep water and heavy surf, and while under heavy enemy machine gun and artillery fire from strongly fortified beach defenses, Sergeant Bonarek swam ashore with the mission of taking charge of his men as they arrived. While under fire, he quieted and reorganized his men and directed them to points of cover. During this difficult time, he gave no through to his personal safety. The courage, perseverance, and devotion to duty, and high quality of leadership displayed by Sergeant Bonarek reflect the highest traditions of the military service and are deserving of the highest praise.
