Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (February 2, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Harold L. Baker (ASN: 6954873), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. Sergeant Baker distinguished himself during a landing operation by fearlessly proceeding to the rescue of a comrade who had fallen into the water and could not regain his footing. Although seriously hampered by heavy enemy fire from the beach, Sergeant Baker saved his comrade’s life by dragging him to shore and safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
