Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 38 (August 10, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John F. Baars (ASN: 6907842), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during World War II. During an enemy counterattack on our positions, Sergeant Baars continually exposed himself to heavy enemy fire and directed the firing of a machine gun on the advancing forces. Throughout this action, the coolness and courage displayed by Sergeant Baars inspired his men in the decisive defeat of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
