The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas L. Aton (ASN: 12015760), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Ferme Combier, Algeria, 9 November 1942. during the Oran Offensive, Sergeant Aton brought his half-track vehicle to the aid of the 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, which had been isolated at Ferme Combier on Djebel Murdjadjo. The added gun fire from this vehicle neutralized a major portion of the enemy resistance and made the high ground on the left flank of the battalion almost impregnable. Later, after his vehicle had been put out of action, Sergeant Aton continued to aid the battalion by carrying ammunition and rations. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
